Humanin

Humanin (HN) is a naturally occurring mitochondrial-derived peptide associated with the mitochondrial MT-RNR2/16S ribosomal RNA region. It was among the first mitochondrial-derived peptides to be characterised and has become an important research tool for investigating communication between mitochondria and cellular signalling pathways.

Experimental studies have examined Humanin primarily in relation to cellular stress resistance and apoptosis. Research indicates that Humanin can interact with intracellular proteins involved in programmed cell death, including members of the BCL-2-associated signalling network, while extracellular signalling has been investigated through pathways involving JAK/STAT and related receptor systems.

Humanin has also been studied in preclinical models examining mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, metabolic regulation and neuronal biology. Research involving Humanin and its synthetic analogues has explored cellular responses associated with neurodegeneration, insulin signalling and age-related changes in mitochondrial activity.
